You're Engaged....

You may want to let people in on the fact that you're engaged as soon as you have that ring on your finger or maybe you may just want to keep it private for a little longer.  Whichever route you choose, you should always tell your parents first, then other family members and then friends.  Nowadays there are so many ways to spread the news: you could telephone, e-mail or use the old fashioned way of sending cards or taking out a newspaper ad.  You could throw a party to celebrate and invite all your friends and relations and remember, this does not oblige you to invite all those people to your wedding.

Once the word is out that you are engaged, everyone will keep asking whether you have set the date yet.  You could let friends and relatives know the wedding date, if it has been set.  You would be expected to have set the wedding date once you are engaged, especially if you want to get married in the popular summer months.  Remember that locations, photographers, caterers and other professionals get booked up early, often a year or two in advance.  The sooner you decide on a date the better chance you will have of getting the venue and professionals of your choice.

Try to picture the type of wedding you both want.  Let your imagination run free - it is not compulsory to have your wedding in an indoor venue like a ballroom or a restaurant.  You may fancy a beach barbecue or escape to Las Vegas.  Combining the wedding ceremony and the honeymoon by flying off to some exotic destination is becoming increasingly popular, with the added bonus that everything is arranged for you.  Before you make any firm decisions, consider how much you have to spend and whether your families will contribute to the expenses.  Make sure that you and your partner are in agreement about your priorities before considsering budgets and logistics.

You will find that as soon as people find out about your forthcoming nuptials they will start asking about whatyou would like for a wedding gift.  It is never too early to register your wedding list, not only to ensure that you receive the wedding gifts you want, but it also makes it easier on family and friends who may be wondering what to buy.  You could always start with a small basic list and then add to it.  You can register a wedding list with more than one store, but try to make it not more than three, otherwise it becomes too difficult to manage.

Once you have that engagement ring on your finger you may never want to take it off, but you will probably have to sometimes.  If your engagement ring is very valuable you should think about having it insured, in case it ever gets lost or damaged.  Read the terms and conditions of your policy carefully and note if your ring is covered for loss as well as damage, in case the worst happens.
